2 Lesser Yellowlegs on scilly

Yesterday this Black-necked Grebe was found by Mark Baker at Old Town Bay. Today it moved to Porthcressa Bay

Today turned out to be one hell of a day! In fact it's probably one of the best September falls that Scilly has observed. The SSE blow and heavy rain overnight paid off! It all started early this morning with Paul Buxton calling me with a Barred Warbler on the Garrison. This was shortly followed by Mark Anderson telling me he had in two fields of Penninis, a Red-backed Shrike, Wryneck, Lapland Bunting and Common Rosefinch! Then Paul St Perrier text with Red-backed Shrike at Popplestone, Bryher. It had only gone 09.00 when Paul Buxton followed up with an Icterine Warbler also on the Garrison. I called Graham Gorden on St Agnes and told him to get his butt out in the field! He did and immediately came back the best bird of the day, Citrine Wagtail on Porthcoose. The wagtail soon found the Big Pool and joined up with the juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs that Graham found on the 12th. This was the last day that the Porth Hellick Lesser Yellowlegs was seen making this the first time that there have been 2 Lesser Yellowlegs observed on Scilly at the same time!

I managed to catch up with the juvenile Red-backed Shrike on Peninnis but dipped out on everything else that was also up there in the thirty minutes that I had. Also had a Pied Flycatcher and Whitethroat

Throughout today, texts and calls were hitting me all the time and on Penninis there were 2 Common Rosefinch,, 1 Red-backed Shrike, 2 Wryneck and 2 Lapland Bunting. On the Garrison there were 1 Melodious, 2 1cterine, 1 Barred Warbler and a single Common Rosefinch. Another of the latter species was at Telegraph and on the golf course there was an Ortolan Bunting with a Nightingale at Newford Duckpond. The third Buff-breasted Sandpiper of the autumn was discovered with the Dotterel on the 12th, was still present, absent the plover. At least 3 more Wryneck were seen and a Lesser Whitethroat was at Porth Hellick

One of the 2 Icterine Warbler that Paul Buxton found on the Garrison

Ren had 2 Garden Warbler on the Garrison but all I could find was this individual. He also had over 15 Blackcap

I had up to 3 pied Flycatcher and 8 spotted Flycatcher on the Garrison

On St Agnes there were Citrine Wagtail, Lesser Yellowlegs, Common Rosefinch, Lapland Bunting and just before dark, Graham went and found a Short-toed Lark in the Broweth Fields. Only a Red-backed Shrike was on Bryher with 10 Whinchat. Yesterday Paul St Perrier had a Spotted Crake on the Tresco Great Pool with a Great-spotted Woodpecker nearby.

1st winter Citrine Wagtail, Big Pool, St Agnes

With these scarcities came good numbers of common migrants and a look in Trenowth fields produced single Redstart, Pied and 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Tree Pipit, 3 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Wryneck, 3 Lapwing and 2 Whinchat. Of the latter species I saw 6 in the Standing stones field with 2 Sedge Warbler, 1 Whitethroat and Kingfisher. Early evening I went looking for of Pauls Icterine Warblers on the Dead Pine walk, Garrison and found it showing off in the ferns. also had 8 Spotted and 3 Pied Flycatcher, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Whitethroat, 7 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap and 2 Whinchat.

With so much goin on, it would of been a great day to have off work.

At least 10 Tree Pipit were on St Mary's.

This Redstart at Trenowth was the only one I saw.

Over 20 Whinchat were on St Mary's. I managed to see 10 including this one at Trenowth with an out of focus Wryneck. another 10 were on Bryher

I saw up to 20 Willow Warbler

A few of us got the third Buff-breasted Sandpiper of the autumn on the airfield just before dark

Also good numbers of Vestal Moth. I kicked at least 10 out of the grass in different areas

This Black-necked Grebe came in close at Old Town Bay yesterday in the heavy rain

Also yesterday this Yellow Wagtail was at Porth Hellick and 15 White Wagtail were at Porthloo

Two days ago, Nigel Hudson found this juvenile Red-backed Shrike in the Standing Stones Field, Lower Moors

The Lesser Yellowlegs continued to perform well at Porth Hellick until the 12th

The Cliff Swallow at Porth Hellick was last seen by Myself, Higgo and Martin Goodey on the evening of the 11th

Lets have some more from PJ Harvey with Desert Sessions
