BLYTH'S REED WARBLER on the Garrison

BLYTH'S REED WARBLER at the play park, Garrison Mark Halliday

Adam Hutt this morning went looking for the CENTRAL ASIAN LESSER WHITETHROAT, that was relocated by Ren and James Siddle yesterday by the play park on the Garrison. He got the whitethroat, but he also stubbled across a acro sp feeding in the same ivy covered wall as the whitethroat. After a while, it was finally nailed as the 5th or 6th  BLYTH'S REED WARBLER  for Scilly.

As the bird was feeding on the wall that borders Star Castle, I spent over 2 hours, on and off, just trying to get a glimpse of the warbler. Getting a pic was near damn impossible as the bird moved through the undergrowth like an eel. I also heard it call.

However, the vocal CENTRAL ASIAN LESSER WHITETHROAT (now thought to be blythi by call) showed very well. While observing these 2 birds, we also got 10 Crossbill, 1 Brambling and a few Siskin overhead and a Lapwing was on the football pitch

This morning a mega in the form of the 5th Scilly CHOUGH was discovered on St Martins. By the afternoon it was relocated on Peninnis, St Mary's

BLACKPOLL WARBLER on me doorstep!

Is this the bird from Bryher?

Liverpool and Everton were live on TV and what a cracking first half of football, when news broke of a possible BLACKPOLL WARBLER at Content Lane! I was there a few hours ago and all I managed to see of note were a single Reed Bunting, 2 Lesser Redpoll and 4 Siskin. I couldn't leave the match, despite people calling and telling me that it was showing well. The forth call was Chris and that was enough to get me off me ass and go and have a look at it. When I arrived, I found a small group of birders looking into the field that backs off me bloody garden! After about 30 minutes, the bird was relocated and showed on and off for the next 20 minutes in the large Elms. also a Lapland Bunting flew overhead calling and I was told that a Yellow-browed warbler was also in the area. I've got to start looking a lot harder in me backyard in future.

The light was very poor, but even so, in the field the warbler still didn't come across as bright as last weeks Bryher bird. Lets hope it sticks around for a few days.

Tony Duckett sent me some images of what looks like a good candidate for Wilson's Snipe that he saw at the beginning of October. He commented that the Snipe shows a bird that in mine and my friend Mark has most of the feather patterning that matched the two previous Wilson's that have been present at Lower Moors.

Also he took some cracking shots of the juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER on the airfield
While this first SYKE'S WARBLER for Scilly was on Tresco

I love the music of Nick Cave and this ones for Paul Semmons. Music video by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds performing Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow is from the LP No More Shall We Part is the eleventh studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 2 April 2001 in the UK (and 10 April in the US). The album showcases the virtuoso talents of the Bad Seeds, with elaborate instrumental sections on nearly every track. Also, Cave's lyrics are less obscure than usual, and he sings in a wider vocal range than he had previously, reaching alto on several tracks.

Possibly of the race halimodendri

I had 15 minutes off work and at about 15.30, I thought I would have a brief look down the lane to Christmas House. I had just gone behind the campsite shop, when I saw movement in a large Pittosporum. Raising my bins I saw a Lesser Whitethroat. However, it had very pale upperparts contrasting with the grey head. I blasted off some shots before the bird flew off and disappeared into the campsite. I called a few people to tell them that I had a possible eastern type race Lesser Whitethroat. The first birders I saw were Adam Hutt and Paul Freestone and on showing them the images, they immediately identified it as an eastern race of possibly halimodendri

Note the tail pattern. The large amount of white on the outer-tail feather, while on the second outer-tail shows a large whitish tip.

Note also the sandy upperparts (paler tertials) contrasting with the grey head

This Redwing showed at very close range down the lane to Christmas House

Michael Davis Pratt (born March 10, 1957) known professionally as Jim White, is a Southern American singer-songwriter and guitarist. White's music can be loosely described as alternative country, but veers off in different, sometimes experimental directions with occasional nods[citation needed] to Tom Waits and the literary narratives of Flannery O'Connor, Cormac McCarthy, and Harry Crews. This is the first song I heard of Whites is this one and ever since I've been hooked!

3rd GREAT WHITE EGRET for Scilly

The 3rd GREAT WHITE EGRET for Scilly was discovered by Steve Joiner while scanning at gulls off Newford Island at about 16.30. When I arrived, the egret was hidden behind rocks, but after 10 minutes, it flew across over the Porthloo Bay and landed on the rocks below Juliet's. It wasn't long before it flew a little closer. Then it was off overhead and gave surburd flight views and flew towards Rocky Hills. It was relocated by Robin at Porth Hellick a few minutes after leaving and heading off NE towards Normandy.

This was the first sighting of it before it flew closer towards us and landed on the rocks below Juliets

Like Glossy Ibis, Great White Egret may become a regular visit to the islands in the next few years.

A small crowd observing the egret flying off

This Lesser Whitethroat was at the campsite, but kept to the top of the Elms

Very good numbers of Redwing moved through in the morning over the island with smaller numbers of Fieldfares and Chaffinch.

Up to 7 Brambling were playing hide and seek at Lower Moors where I also got a single Yellow-browed Warbler, Firecrest, 4 Woodcock, 5 Goldcrest and 10+Chiffchaff

Possible EMRENBERG'S REDSTART?  (samamisicus) at the Garrison this evening

Had a quick look down the lane to Christmas House just after 17.00 and found a male Redstart with 2 Black Redstart on the fence posts. I put me bins up and immediately noticed that it had pale panel showing featears of a possible EMRENBERG'S REDSTART (samamisicus). The bird was on privite land and therefore I could only alert local birders. I even knocked on Jenny's door, the owmer of the drive,  but she was not in.

When I took these shots, there was thick fog and it was getting dark

I had half an hour off work and had a brief look around Sunnyside area. There was a very vocal Yellow-browed Warbler in the Ivy covered Elms, 150 Chaffinch in one of the weedy fields, Woodcock, and good numbers of Redwing, (50+ being the largest number) and Chaffinch overhead.

This Whinchat was at nearby Telegraph

A few days ago I canoed to Samson....

...And all I saw of note were a female Merlin and Water Rail. Returning home I got very close to the 2 Spoonbill on Yellow Rock. Note me work, Star Castle in the background
